Further evidence that Zappa was indeed "Jack of All Trades, Master of All"

I think the title of this album is quite appropriate for the music in general, not only the final cut, which consists of about 2 minutes worth of pure "white noise". Weasels is full of abrupt transitions that almost rip you apart when listening. Free jazz, Musique Concrete, raunchy blues, interesting, provocative orchestral music, short live, "lewd" outbursts, this record just keeps moving at a quick, almost taxing pace, which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5: Unlike such recordings as Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Overnight Sensation, Burnt Weeny Sandwich (and several others) Weasels isn''t particularly cohesive in terms of sound and concept and not always so "listenable" - it''s one of those records that you just have to be in the right mood to appreciate.

So, although it''s not for the "faint of heart" and I wouldn''t recommend it for a Zappa neophyte, there are some true Zappa gems on here: "Toads of the Short Forest" (check out "Camirillo Brillo" on "Overnight Sensation" for more info about those toads), "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue", "Dwarf Nebula", "Orange County Lumber Truck" are all rather astonishing, innovative pieces of music, and each entirely different from the other.

If you weren''t convinced already, Weasels provides further evidence that Zappa was indeed "Jack of All Trades, Master of All".

Don''t listen to those other reviews. This is a great place to begin your journey with Frank Zappa. Recorded over an astonishingly short period of the late 60s with the full lineup of the original Mothers of Invention, every song is a knockout but completely unlike the others. This is what the White Album could have sounded like if it had been a single LP with the weak tracks removed. (Whoever accuses Zappa of sloppy editing must be listening to a different record.) Highly recommended to anyone interested in "serious composers who work with rock".

Zappa has a lot to be proud of. During his lifetime he has reached many peaks. Weasels Ripped My Flesh is up there with some of his best work along with Freak Out, We''re Only in It For The Money, One Size Fits All and Joe''s Garage etc.

Like Freak Out, there''s something in it for everyone: musique concrete (the title track), blues (Directly From My Heart To You), Rock (My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama), guitar-oriented music (Get A Little) and bit of 20th century classical (The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque).

All CD releases prior to the 2012 remaster had digital reverb and Didja Get Any Onya? featured 3 minutes of extra music. Hardcore fans don''t like those CD''s and prefer the vinyl. The 2012 remaster reverts back to the original vinyl mix. Fans also complain about the audio on previous CD''s and call it the "bad batch" releases.

I personally don''t think the previous CD''s of Weasels aren''t bad at all (maybe because I got used to them). The old CD''s of Chunga''s Revenge, You Are What You Is and Tinseltown Rebellion are bad. Still I do prefer the 2012 remaster.

Every Zappa repressing I purchased (and I bought many) are amazing. Perfectly flat, very low rumble and surface noise. They even look good and nice to the touch. Only wish every record company had their level of quality control.

When I heard that these new editions of 60 of Frank Zappa''s classic albums were coming out, I was both overjoyed and puzzled, but also curious enough to see whether there would be any sonic upgrades from what was out there before from Rykodisc and other sources. The mastering for this album is fantastic, except that this edition omits the extended "Didja Git Any On Ya"; I wonder why. Also, I want to note to others who really like the jam called "Orange County Lumber Truck" that, if you really like that bit of instrumentation by this particular group of Mothers, seek out a copy of a disk called MOTHERS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME which contains the full jam; it cooks! Hopefully, some of these missing pieces will end up on their own compilation or we will indeed see a reissue of the afore-mentioned MOTHERS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME disk!

Nice remastering of the vinyl cut
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2018
The remastering of this vinyl album is very nice. It has a slightly different sonic picture than the original Bizarre release. Pressing is flat and quiet. If you''re a Zappa fan and intrigued by this, I don''t think you''ll be disappointed.

Weasels is a must own for anyone who appreciates Frank Zappa. If you had the pleasure of seeing him in concert, which I''m glad I did, then this array of songs should be part of your collection. In the realm of rock and roll, the strong violin found in "Directly From My Heart To You," is unsurpassed. I only wish that Zappa had played that the night I saw him---at Stanford''s Maples Pavillion, 1977---An afternoon with a Sexually Aroused Gasmask, (the insane laughing sequence was once part of my answering machine''s outgoing message) and the Dwarf songs are Zappa classics. Own this and love it you will!

I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. This is a review of the 2012 CD remaster. The initial impression is that the sound is a little muted. Given the age of the original master recording that is perhaps to be expected. The sound stage is good whilst the dynamic range is slightly muted. There does not appear to be any audible compression or distortion. The channel separation and overall balance are good. Strings are crisp and clear. The drum sound is slightly laid back but not overly so. Vocals are clear and do not fade in and out. The bass guitar is part of the backing mix and is also slightly muted but it is still discernable. The bass on some tracks is however outstanding having the ability to reverberate and offset the intermingling upper registers. The saxophone can be a little restrained. Whilst this is not a spacious or atmospheric recording it still has a good feeling and sense of presence. The recording has all the appearances of having been sensitively remastered. Compared with the original it is limited but no more so than other recordings of this era. Overall not bad sound quality given when originally recorded.

I''ve always been drawn to this Zappa/Mothers album on account of the superbly twisted artwork. However, whereas I discovered and fell in love with Beefheart in my teens, my appreciation of Zappa''s prolific and varied output has been a much slower to develop thing. Released as a Mothers of Invention album, this is Zappa et al at their most surreal or even Dada-esque. Very much of it''s time, and certainly not easy listening, or music for all/any occasion. It''s wall to wall crazy ''Freak''-era weirdness, save only for a rather nice blues cover (?), with track titles like ''Prelude to the Afternoon of a Sexually Aroused Gas Mask'' accurately conveying the tenor of the contents. I''m becoming more of a Zappa devotee, the more I explore the Zappa-verse. But whilst this is interesting and worth having, it''s far from my favourite.

As a life-long fan of Uncle Frank I greeted the package when it arrived on my desk like a long lost friend. I sold the vinyl album many years ago and had not heard it for a long time. What can you say about Zappa that hasn''t been said before? I won''t even try. Suffice to say that this album was made as the Mothers of Invention morphed from one line - up and style to another and acts as a bridge of sorts between the two. Pull up a chair, light up a cigarette, pour a strong cup of coffee and listen to this album and marvel that no-one has even approached the musicianship, composing skills, world vision and demented humour of Mr Z.
